On their way to the second weekend of Coachella, festival goers stuck in traffic were greeted by billboards of He-Man and Skeletor to promote the upcoming 'Masters of the Universe' movie. These weren't your typical billboards, though. They were made entirely out of drones. Capitalizing on the inevitable gridlock of Coachella travel, and the overall popularity of the festival's billboards, Mattel decided to provide some entertainment during a moment that might not be fun for many.

“Innovation is at the core of how we show up—and this time, it takes to the sky,” said Nick Karamanos, SVP of Entertainment Partnerships at Mattel. “By unleashing He-Man and Skeletor over the desert landscape in a first-of-its-kind drone billboard, we’re turning the journey to the festival into an unexpected, can’t-miss moment for fans.”

The spectacle, which also marked the first-ever drone billboard at Coachella, was powered by 400 synchronized drones, operated by Heads in the Sky Dones, an agency that specializes in drone shows. The drones alternated between cheeky messages that read “HONK FOR HE-MAN” and “SHOULD HAVE LEFT EARLIER,” as well as outlines of the iconic characters and other imagery from the movie.

Fans loved the light trolling of the billboards. "Deploying 400 drones in the middle of the desert just to hate on Coachella traffic...gotta respect the dedication," replied one fan. "Skeletor trolling traffic, love it," said another.

You can catch the final drone show tonight, Friday, April 17, from 8:30 pm and 9:45 pm PT.

Masters of the Universe is a brand new version of the classic cartoon/toyline from the 80's. The movie follows Prince Adam (Nicholas Galitzine) back to Eternia, after being separated from the Sword of Power for 15 years, where he discovers his home shattered under the fiendish rule of Skeletor (Jared Leto). To save his family and his world, Adam must join forces with his closest allies, Teela (Camila Mendes) and Duncan/Man-At-Arms (Idris Elba), and embrace his true destiny as He-Man — the most powerful man in the universe.

Masters of the Universe powers into theaters June 5, 2026.
