It looks like Gotham might be getting a little chilly. Keep reading to find out why 🥶
It's official! We have our first look at the highly anticipated The Batman II, starring Robert Pattinson as the caped crusader. The photos, shared on Instagram (May 7), are only two frames from the movie but they provide a lot of information.
First off, the fact that we're seeing production stills at all confirms that cameras are rolling. A year ago, director Matt Reeves hadn't even finished a script, leaving fans questioning whether or not the movie would actually see the light of day. Luckily for us, he was taking his time, which shows that a lot of care and attention is going into the story.
Now, let's talk about the photos themselves. Unfortunately, we will have to wait a little while longer to see how Batman will look in his sequel but we have a look at the next best thing: The Batmobile.
It's clear Batman will still be rocking his tricked out muscle car, which gave us one of the best live action Batmobile sequences in the first movie. Much like the first movie's Batmobile chase scene, this one also looks like it will take place in incliment weather, but if you look closer, it doesn't look like rain this time. Based on the heaviness of the precipitation, it looks a lot like snow which could signify that the movie takes place in the Winter, perfect for a moody Batman story, but it could also signify a particular villain.
"DEATH IS COLD….BATMAN ❄️🥶," one of the highest liked comment on DC's post reads, a reference to Batman's nemesis, Mr. Freeze. As of now this is pure speculation, but there must be some significance to sharing these snowy shots first, right? Production has been very tight lipped about any Batman II plot updates, particularly its villain. Some recent casting news confirmed that Sebastian Stan would be playing Harvey Dent, the alter ego of Two Face, but it wasn't confirmed that he would be the main villain in the movie.
Mr. Freeze would be a unique, but welcome choice for this universe. The last time he was onscreen was in the infamous Batman & Robin (1997) played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, in a very cartoony take on the character. Mr. Freeze is due for a modern and serious update. It would also set The Batman universe apart from Christopher Nolan's trilogy more so.
The two often get compared based on their "grounded" takes on the character, using somewhat realistic conventions to portray Batman's tech, villains, etc. A sequel with Two Face as the villain would again feel too similar to Nolan's The Dark Knight. In a recent interview with Deadline, Pattinson said this about the sequel, "It’s going to be interesting seeing it come out. It’s taking some big swings."
An unconventional villain in a grounded universe definitely sounds like a big swing.
The Batman II is scheduled to be released in theaters October 1st, 2027.
