A theatrical dream may soon become reality for emo fans. Actor and playwright John Cameron Mitchell has teased a secret stage project with My Chemical Romance, sparking speculation of an immersive, Black Parade–inspired experience.
Rockers, My Chemical Romance may be making a mark on Broadway in the near future. On a recent episode of Bob The Drag Queen's Only Child podcast, actor and playwright John Cameron Mitchell teased that he is working on a "secret" project with the band.
While speaking with Bob, Mitchell casually dropped, "My Chemical Romance, who I'm working on a project with for theater..." to which Bob The Drag Queen interrupted, asking for more information. Mitchell continued, “There’s a project for theater in the works. It’s still a secret; nothing’s been officially announced. That’s all I can say for now. There are papers to sign, but honestly, they’re wonderful people.” Skip to the 3:11 mark to listen to his comments
While no official information has been released, the rumors have begun. Many fans believe the project will be centered around the band's third and by far their most popular album, The Black Parade. In 2025, the band embarked on their biggest tour to date, playing the album in its entirety at stadiums across the country (which we caught at MetLife Stadium), and it's continuing this year as well. Instead of a typical band performance, the band adopted stage personas and built new lore around the album, which already had its own already established lore about the main character's journey to the afterlife. It truly felt like a stage show, which makes the band's music perfect for Broadway. On top of this, John Cameron Mitchell, the mastermind behind Hedwig and the Angry Inch, sounds like the perfect collaborator due to his penchant for punk rock.
"Sweaty Oracle," a Broadway insider caught wind of the story and had some additional tentative details to share. According to him, this project will not appear on Broadway proper but instead will be closer to a "Sleep No More" style performance. Sleep No More is an interactive theater performance that features actors located in various rooms while the audience travels through them at their own pace, slowly unlocking pieces of the story. It's very macabre and unconventional, which is perfect for My Chemical Romance. "I told you that, like every theater kid who has emo crossover, I have been dreaming about this moment for most of my life," said Sweaty Oracle. He also goes on to explain a potential breakdown of what the show could entail. Allegedly, each room will be centered around a certain song from the album and will explore different cultures' interpretations of the afterlife.

As expected, the fans are excited as well. "I've been ghostwriting this in my head since 13," commented one user on Sweaty Oracle's post. Others expressed excitement for John Cameron Mitchell's involvement. One commenter shared, "John Cameron Mitchell directing we actually fucking won holy shit." While this does sound like a dream come true for theater-obsessed emo kids, others are a little apprehensive about one glaring potential issue. "Already crying at the future ticket prices," another fan commented. Considering the band's booming popularity and the price of live theater in general, this sounds like a legitimate concern when you lump them together. "I will sell a kidney, I do not care," someone responded, which is dedication we can appreciate.
